Last week we went on a field-trip to Banco do Brasil. The trip to the bank showed students how the math skills they are learning in school can be applied to everyday life when they grow up. They visited the bank's vault and observed the daily routine and responsibilities of the bank employees.
Our fifth Unit of Inquiry has begun!
Each class decided on the type of event and set off by searching for pupils and materials needed to realize their event. When they approached teachers, staff members, bedeis, heads etc... requesting the resources needed they were kindly denied to their access to materials and resources stressing the need for planning, scheduling, and following a system.
Students were then debriefed in class on what happened and began to unpack the new central idea: Careful thinking and planning can help us express ideas.
How We Express Ourselves
Careful thinking and planning can help us express ideas
Lines of Inquiry:
-Personal expression and creativity -Reasons for planning -Putting plans into practice
We started with the following provocation:
The PYP5 students were asked to prepare an event - something related to expressing ideas (Dance competition, Karaoke, etc).
They were faced with: 'Oh, sorry! I can't lend you costumes because I have a class next period when they will need them. Next time, please let me know in advance so I can reserve these items for you.' Or, 'Oh sorry, we can have an event today during lunch time! It's not in the calendar. We need at least a week in advance to put things in our school calendar'.
Students were made to feel that they needed to think and plan before carrying out their proposal.
Students were then debriefed in class on what happened and began to unpack the new central idea: Careful thinking and planning can help us express ideas.
It was a great provocation to get the wheels in their minds turning!
