March 28th, 2016

Welcome back to school!

We hope you had a great time over the holidays!

Before our mid-term break the PYP5 students went on a field-trip to the Market.  Their objective was to fulfill two important challenges!

Before the kids went to the market they planned a fun and healthy pic-nic.  The class was then divided into 5 small groups (sweets, savoury, dairy, drinks, and fruits and cutlery).  Their first challenge was to find the ingredients and other items for their picnic within a R$30.00 budget.

Their second challenge was to compare brands and prices before making their purchases.

This trip was a very practical way to show students how the math skills they are learning in school, such as summing up totals (adding), making change (subtracting), and budgeting can be applied to everyday life.

The trip was a HUGE hit among the kids and they topped it off with a very rewarding pic-nic!

Notes & Important dates

  • PYP 6 & 7 Students have organised a bake sale this coming Friday, 1st April in order to raise money for Action Projects in the Primary.  We would like to ask you to support our project by letting your child bring money to buy baked goods (savoury and sweet). The price per item will be R$2. Please send money (no more than 5R$) in children’s diaries and teachers will help them purchase items.

Busy Week Ahead!

Monday, March 14, 2016

Last week we went on a field-trip to Banco do Brasil.  The trip to the bank showed students how the math skills they are learning in school can be applied to everyday life when they grow up. They visited the bank's vault and observed the daily routine and responsibilities of the bank employees.

Our fifth Unit of Inquiry has begun!
 How We Express Ourselves

Careful thinking and planning can help us express ideas

Lines of Inquiry:
-Personal expression and creativity -Reasons for planning -Putting plans into practice

We started with the following provocation:

The PYP5 students were asked to prepare an event - something related to expressing ideas (Dance competition, Karaoke, etc).

Each class decided on the type of event and set off by searching for pupils and materials needed to realize their event. When they approached teachers, staff members, bedeis, heads etc... requesting the resources needed they were kindly denied to their access to materials and resources stressing the need for planning, scheduling, and following a system.

They were faced with: 'Oh, sorry! I can't lend you costumes because I have a class next period when they will need them. Next time, please let me know in advance so I can reserve these items for you.'  Or, 'Oh sorry, we can have an event today during lunch time! It's not in the calendar. We need at least a week in advance to put things in our school calendar'.

Students were made to feel that they needed to think and plan before carrying out their proposal.

Students were then debriefed in class on what happened and began to unpack the new central idea: Careful thinking and planning can help us express ideas.

It was a great provocation to get the wheels in their minds turning!

A few reminders for this week:

- SAT's Tuesday - Friday
- Field-trip to the Market

Book week and more...

Dear parents,

Last week was Book Week and students participated actively in many different events happening throughout the week.
 - They had the chance to go to different teachers around school for one period every afternoon from Monday to Thursday.
 - They could talk to a book author on Friday and even get an autograph at the end of the day. Her book is still being sold in school this week.
 - Friday was Book Character day! Students could come dressed as a book character!
 - And also, there were parents who came to read books to students! Thank you!

This week PYP 5's are going on a field trip! Tuesday 8th all PYP 5 groups will visit Banco do Brasil to learn more about banking and ask some questions that arose in class discussions. All students are to be in school on time (7:45) wearing normal school uniform. The bus leaves at 8:00 and will be back to school at 12:00 for lunch.

Thank you very much for your support sending us boxes and packages of products for our activity in class. We created a little market in each classroom and there is enough products to keep it running for the rest of the unit! Students are putting into practice Maths concepts and skills by adding, subtracting and multiplying numbers with decimals through this shopping role play.

Have a nice week!
